organisers pose in 1911-style dinner dress with the magnificent backdrop of the Transporter Bridge

Raise your glasses to the symbol of Teesside! Fundraisers are being invited to be part of history when a charity dinner is held at Middlesbrough Town Hall to celebrate 100 years of the Transporter Bridge.

Organisers promise that the Transporter Bridge Centenary Dinner will be a fun-filled evening featuring a mouth-watering three-course dinner, complimentary wine, great music and dance.

Guests will be entertained by Middlesbrough-born impressionist comedian Kevin Connelly.

The event will take place in the same Town Hall room that hosted a banquet attended by HRH Prince Arthur of Connaught after he had carried out the official opening of the iconic structure a century ago, in October 1911.

With a dress-code of “black-tie/glamorous”, the evening will also feature an auction of money-can’t-buy prizes, together with a photographic and video celebration of the Transporter.

Details of the event together with photographs of all those attending will be stored at Teesside Archives to be enjoyed by future generations of Teessiders.

The event for up to 300 guests is being organised by Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation, www.teessidecharity.org.uk, which will donate all profits to local community causes.

The Foundation is backed by a number of Teesside businesses and individuals who have already donated £125,000 to help local community groups.

Trustee Andy Preston said: “Attending the Centenary Dinner is a unique opportunity to be part of local history. The aim of the night is to celebrate the Transporter’s first century, to look forward to the next 100 years and to raise funds for some great Teesside causes.

“But we also promise that it will be a great night, full of fun, banter, food, wine and song! I’m sure the business community will give us fantastic support to mark a very special occasion.”
