Help is on hand in Middlesbrough for steel worker job applicants.

SSI have launched an online recruitment drive for 1,000 steel workers for the re-opening of the Redcar steel plant.

Middlesbrough Council have teamed up with Job Centre Plus to help applicants who do not have internet access or are unfamiliar with how online job applications work.

The Council and Job Centre Plus have set-up a special hotline with the help of local company Avanta for people to ring - 01642 224115.

Callers will be able to book an appointment for advice on the online application at one of the organisations in the town which help people get into work.

Organisations providing the help are: Hope Foundation, Great Expectations, West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust, Middlesbrough Libraries, Pertemps, Breckon Hill Community Centre, Newport Community Centre, CVL, BME Network and Streets Ahead.

A total of 258 appointments will be available in the first week. Information on library opening times will also be provided to all who attend the appointments to enable people to track their applications.

Middlesbrough residents will be given a free one-month pass to the library.

Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “The re-opening of the steel plant in Redcar is a very exciting development and will enable many Middlesbrough workers to get back into employment.

“We wanted to ensure that no potential applicant will be put off by the recruitment process being online and we hope these workshops will prove helpful and accessible to all.”

Redcar and Cleveland Council has a separate helpline for its residents - 01642 442988.
