Patrick Monahan and Claire Wordsworth with lovemiddlesbrough merchandise

One of the most popular comics in the country has become an official ambassador for Middlesbrough – and got his hands on a must-have Christmas gift!

Patrick Monahan, who had a great 2011 by winning ITV’s stand-up contest Show Me The Funny, has officially been made a Love Middlesbrough ambassador.

Patrick loves talking about the town in his comedy routine when he tours nationally and around the world.

The 35-year-old, who has just released his first DVD, said becoming a Love Middlesbrough ambassador was “fantastic”.

“It’s always been part of my routine to say that I’m from Middlesbrough,” he said.

“It’s nice now to be able to say ‘I’m from Middlesbrough and I’m an ambassador!’

“Middlesbrough people really got behind me when I did the show.

“I think most people around the country like Middlesbrough. The problem 10 years ago was that most people thought we were Geordies.

“I think now Middlesbrough is more of a major player in the North East. To me it’s always felt like a big city.”

He added: “The area was built on steelworks and in the past people were always tough.

“Now I can’t go around Middlesbrough without people hugging me!”

Patrick was given a Love Middlesbrough special badge and a goody bag from campaign co-ordinator Claire Wordsworth.

And Patrick was delighted with one of the items in the goody bag which is set to become a must-have stocking filler for Christmas.

The Love Middlesbrough ice scraper is the perfect item for people who want to look good and show their love for their hometown while scraping the ice off their car.

The Ice scrapers cost £2.50 each and can be bought from the Town Hall Box Office and Information Centre, mima and Gallery TS1.

More Love Middlesbrough merchandise, including mugs, air fresheners and badges, can also be bought from these venues.

Claire Wordsworth said: “It was wonderful of Patrick to come to the Town Hall to officially become a Love Middlesbrough ambassador.

“He’s a lovely person and is very charismatic, friendly and of course funny!

“His profile is sky high at the moment after his victory on Show Me The Funny and with his new DVD being out so we couldn’t ask for a better ambassador for Middlesbrough.”
