Generator’s Urban Music Training course UMT:PLAY gives young people the opportunity to take part in a free, week-long intensive course of expert music training (instrumental, vocal, percussion, DJing, music technology and stagecraft).
UMT:PLAY courses are free for young people aged between 11-24 and provide a framework of support designed to inspire and motivate through the integration of music and people, and aid their development so they can raise their game musically, professionally and personally.
Urban Music Training (UMT) was launched by Generator in 2010 and has already seen hundreds of young people graduate through UMT:BEATS, UMT:VOX and UMT:PLAY, with the main focus on young people creating, recording and performing new music. The young people are also heavily involved in planning and delivering UMT and in putting on large-scale events, including the successful UMT:Emerging stage at Evolution Festival.
UMT:PLAY is open to all abilities and backgrounds, suitable for 11-24 year olds region-wide. Spaces are free but extremely limited. Courses run throughout the year and they are currently recruiting for:

Joe Frankland, Music & Artist Development Manager at Generator says:
“Generator’s Urban Music Training programme has been a huge success already. Our PLAY, BEATS and VOX courses are often over-subscribed and each course culminates in a live performance. This year also saw UMT taking over a stage at Evolution Festival – a great opportunity to show off our UMT graduates and the wealth of talent from the North East.
UMT:PLAY courses provide a fun and innovative way to learn from expert tutors and create, record and perform new music. The Arts Centre Washington is the perfect base for our summer course and we’re looking for young musicians from across the region to take part this year.”
UMT:PLAY is part of NE Generation and has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, creating a lasting impact from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity across the UK
