Russell Brand announces Boro gig in 2018

Teesside’s comedy fans have a huge treat ahead, with global comedy big-hitter Russell Brand today confirming a date for Middlesbrough Town Hall in the summer of 2018!

The multi award-winning comic and actor will be bringing his brand-new show Re:Birth to the Town Hall as part of a major national tour on Wednesday 25 July 2018.

Tickets go on sale at 10am next Friday (Friday 3 February), with the gig marking the first major date so far confirmed for what is set to be an exciting new era at the Town Hall after its current major refurbishment is complete.

Since rising to fame in 2003, Russell Brand has established himself as one of the world’s most celebrated stand-up comedians. His acclaimed tours include 2006’s Shame, 2007’s Only Joking, 2009’s Scandalous (which marked his US live debut) and 2013’s critically acclaimed and hugely successful Messiah Complex (which was also a best-selling DVD).

Aside from stand-up, Russell is also a phenomenally successful broadcaster, actor, author, podcaster, columnist, political commentator as well as mental health and drug rehabilitation activist.

Describing his new show, Russell said: “How do we make sense of the madness of our lives once we become parents? What am I going to tell my daughter about conformity and responsibility? What happens if she grows up to be like me or, worse, date someone like me?”

The Town Hall gig is set to be part of an exciting new adventure for the much-loved venue, after a string of music legends including Oasis, Paul Weller, The Arctic Monkeys, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Robbie Williams and classical heavyweights including Johann Strauss and Sir Edward Elgar all stormed the stage in its 128-year history.

And, in recent years, a string of comedy big-hitters including Michael McIntyre, John Bishop, Jimmy Carr, Sarah Millican, Frankie Boyle and bags more besides have all smashed box office records and helped the Town Hall become one of the best loved comedy venues in the country.

Rob Guest of Middlesbrough Town Hall said: “The Town Hall has enjoyed literally thousands of amazing nights in its long and colourful history, and the exciting adventure is going to continue for generations to come.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to have a date with Russell in our diary here – it’s a real coup for comedy fans from all over Teesside and beyond, and it just confirms that the Town Hall and our audiences far and wide can look forward to an amazing future.

“Our refurbishment is well underway, and having this date in the diary absolutely brings the future to life in a really big way.”

Graham Ramsay of promoters Ten Feet Tall, who work alongside the Town Hall to bring a string of top comedy gigs to Teesside, said: “About a month back one of our closest agent friends asked us to hold a date for a ‘mystery act’. We were obviously on the edge of our seats to find out who it was.

“Plenty of speculation in the office, but nobody came close to guessing that it would be Russell Brand - the man's an international arena-filling megastar! We're cheeky, but even WE wouldn't have had the front to approach him for a show in Boro.

“Like millions of people around the world, I’m a real fan. He’s a bold and totally mesmerising character - a genuine one-off. It goes without saying that we're beyond delighted to get this one on the calendar, and can't wait for next summer to see him up there on that Town Hall stage.”

• Russell Brand. Re:Birth. Middlesbrough Town Hall. Weds 25 July 2018. 8pm. Age 16+. Tickets: £27.50+bf. (Max 6 tickets per transaction).
