One Planet Pioneer apprentices (L-R) James Stubbs, Curtis Churchill, Daniel Clemmet and Bailey Harker take a well-earned rest after installing a bench at Maelor’s Way in Stainton

Walkers enjoying a stroll along a local trail can enjoy a breather thanks to the efforts of a team of apprentices.

Middlesbrough Council donated some old and unwanted benches to the One Planet Pioneer team which set about giving them new life.

The four apprentices got to work sanding, painting and rebuilding the three old benches, and soon had them restored to their former glory.

Then they created a solid foundation by mixing and casting concrete into a shuttering jig, which was then allowed to set.

The team returned three days later to install and securely fix the first of three restored benches on Maelor’s Way, a local trail created in memory of local ward Councillor Maelor Williams who died in 2015.

One Planet Pioneer Officer Casper Scallen, who worked with the team, said: “After working on the site during the previous autumn and winter it was decided it would be nice to have seating for people to take a rest and admire the view there.

“The bench looks fantastic and we hope it’s enjoyed by walkers for many years to come.”

One Planet Pioneer apprentices from Middlesbrough Environment City and Tees Valley Wildlife Trust will install the other two benches at Maze Park Nature Reserve near the Tees Barrage and in the new Orchard and Wildflower Meadow at Macmillan Academy.
