Dundas shopping centre working to become dementia friendly

Middlesbrough’s Dundas Shopping Centre and Indoor Market has joined the Dementia Friendly Middlesbrough Project and is working to becoming a “Dementia Friendly” shopping centre.

As part of this initiative, centre management and staff at Jeans Kitchen, the café at the heart of the indoor market, have become Dementia Friends by attending a training and awareness programme run by Cleveland Alzheimer’s Residential Centre.

They are now fully trained in helping people with dementia and their carers to get about the centre and feel safe shopping.

Dundas Market Manager David Harris says: “As a community oriented shopping centre we always try to support all people in their shopping.

“Almost 80 per cent of people with dementia list shopping as their favourite activity, but often people stop going as their dementia progresses because they are worried about getting the support they need. Our dementia friendly training means that we can now provide more help.

“We are committed to creating a destination where both carers and people living with dementia can feel safe and comfortable visiting.”

Dundas Shopping Centre has range of the shops offering value for money, from national brands like Boyes, B&M, Fulton Foods and Cooplands to well-known local independents like The Festival Shop, Tik Tok, Homefair Blinds, Buckshees Military Surplus and LD Printing.

Dundas Market is the only indoor market in Middlesbrough with more than 20 exciting and welcoming market stalls, including the award-winning Brickyard Bakery, hand-making artisan bread and cakes at affordable prices, Sweet Corner, Jean’s Kitchen and Danny’s Family Butchers, selling everything from handbags to gladrags, furniture to fizzbombs, make ups to vapes, candles to mirrors, furniture to virtual reality experiences and mobile phone and tablet repairs.
