This November, RSPB Saltholme is giving visitors the chance to witness some fantastic wildlife spectacles, by joining a Sunset Safari.

Starting on 2 November, and running every Thursday and Sunday throughout the month, the Teesside nature reserve is building on its ever popular Soup and Starlings events to show visitors what else the reserve has to offer at this time of year.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff will show visitors the best place to see birds and wildlife, and a delicious mug of soup will be on offer to keep everyone warm whilst they sit back and enjoy the show.

Visitor Experience Officer, Craig McNeil said: “Our Soup and Starling events have always been immensely popular, but now we want to give people the opportunity to see the other fantastic wildlife that’s around at this time of day.”

Along with the stunning murmurations of starlings, RSPB Saltholme also has a very active little egret roost - these stunning, white, herons roost in the reserve’s trees. As the sun sets there’s also the arrival of the many wildfowl that choose to roost on and around the reserve’s pools and wet grassland.

Craig added: “Even though we’ll be taking the opportunity to showcase as much of the reserve’s twilight activity as we can, if the starlings are displaying well, they will of course take centre stage - their murmurations are quite simply breath-taking.”

The reed beds at RSPB Saltholme provide the perfect overnight roost for starlings, resulting in some fantastic murmurations. The birds arrive in small groups, slowly at first, and build up to a swirling, pulsing group that shifts with a fluid motion, a cloud of birds moving as one, before dropping into the roost, just as darkness falls.

RSPB Saltholme will be running Sunset Safaris every Thursday and Sunday throughout November. Booking is essential. For further information and to book, call the visitor centre on 01642 546625.
