Logo for Eid in the Park

On Tuesday the 21st of August, Albert Park in Middlesbrough will play host to the annual Muslim celebration of Eid ul Adha for only the second time in Middlesbrough’s history. The event, which has been organised by local Muslims aims to bring Muslims together to offer their Eid prayer in the park.

Eid ul Adha is the second of the two Eid’s celebrated by the Muslim community and it consists of the coming together of all Muslims, men, women and children to celebrate the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage to commemorate the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Pbuh) to God.

Eid generally is a day of happiness, prayer, celebration and plenty of food! The itinerary in brief, will include an introduction, a short Eid prayer and a sermon given by local Imam. People will then be free to return home to carry on their celebrations.

Tahir Majid, who is a part of the team organising the day, explained the reasons for wanting to organise this event: “As Muslims we do our best to follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) and his way was to pray the Eid prayers not in the mosques but outdoors. The local mosques do not have the capacity to cater for all the Muslims who want to take part in the Eid service in one go, whereas we can facilitate this in the park and it will help bring everyone together. It’s a great way for us to share our celebration with the wider community and anyone who wants to come along and observe what Muslims do”.

Note: The event will take place weather permitting, if it rains on the day then the prayers will take place in the mosques as per usual.
