Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, mima is one of the UK's leading galleries for modern and contemporary art and craft. The landmark building designed by Erick van Egeraat Architects is situated in the heart of Middlesbrough. mima opened to international critical acclaim in January 2007.
Hosting temporary exhibitions of fine art and craft from 1900 to the present, mima showcases work by internationally acclaimed artists. The programme includes painting, drawing, ceramics, jewellery, sound, film, mixed media, photography and sculpture.
The gallery brings together the town's art collections for the first time, from Middlesbrough Art Gallery and Cleveland Craft Centre. Selected works from the collection are showcased in an annual collection show.
Exhibitions change throughout the year and admission is free.
The Office of Useful Art
Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, mima's first floor project space has become The Office of the Asociacion de Arte Útil – presenting case studies from the Archive of Arte Útil and reintroducing the old idea that art is not for its own sake, but a tool for social change.
The office is not an art exhibition but a working office for the association open to the public and at the core of mima’s new philosophy.
Artworks from the collection are displayed alongside this archive, which you could consider being examples of useful art – you are invited to participate in the working office, with opportunities to make, create and share your ideas of what useful art means to you.
