Meet at mima

Join curator and researcher James Beighton to explore some of Middlesbrough’s public art. We visit key works commissioned through the twentieth and twenty-first century and talk about the impact and importance of art in the public realm.

We think about how the shape and use of the town has shifted in the past 50 years and look at how public art has been part of the cultural and physical landscape of Middlesbrough. By exploring works that have changed, been moved and disappeared, we discuss the passing of time in relation to pieces that were often commissioned as permanent works.

Beighton is currently researching histories of art in Teesside. This event provides context for a new, temporary public work by artists Joanne Tatham & Tom O’Sullivan that will be completed in Autumn 2017. Tatham and O’Sullivan’s practice often provokes debates around identity and representations of place.

We will be on the move for the majority of this event so please wear comfortable and warm clothes and shoes. If the weather is very poor we will make alternative plans.

Please sign up for this event by emailing Elinor Morgan on Elinor.morgan@tees.ac.uk
